COMMON REACTIONS TO EXAMINATION STRESS

The common reaction to examination is categorised as Physical reaction, Psychological or emotional reaction and behavioural reaction. When we are stress we may go through the following situation during examination :

PHYSICAL REACTION

  • Sleep disturbances
  • Changes in appetite
  • Cold and other respiratory infections
  • Backache, cervical ache
  • Head ache and migraine
  • Lethargy (tiredness or laziness or exhausted)
  • Fast, shallow breathing
  • Allergies
  • Muscle tension
  • Frequent urge to pass urine
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea (sickness or feel like vomiting)
  • Indigestion

 

PSYCHOLOGICAL / EMOTIONAL REACTION

 

  • Anxiety or fearfulness
  • Withdrawn or restless
  • Low self esteem
  • Depression or sadness
  • Increased risk of self harm
  • Irritability
  • Frustration and aggression
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Unable to relax
  • Feeling mentally drained out (exhausted)
  • Fussy, gloomy or suspicious
  • Being constantly frightened or irritable

 

BEHAVIOURAL REACTION

  • Alcohol abuse
  • Smoking / use of tobacco and other drugs

  • Abuse of over the counter medications (OTC) (anti anxiety, anti-depressant, sleeping pills)
  • Eating disorders
  • Relationship issue or peer pressure
  • Not attending classes
  • Procrastination
  • Short span of concentration
  • Easily distracted
  • Withdrawal
